Many large, renowned car brands are hard at work on innovations. Certainly in the field of electric driving, because not only is this the mobility of the future, it is also an area where there is still a lot of ground to be gained. In that context, it is good to look at bidirectional charging with Mercedes. What are the possibilities that you already have and why are Mercedes and bidirectional charging such a good combination?
Can you currently charge your Mercedes bidirectionally?
The Mercedes EQS is capable of bidirectional charging, but this is the model that was launched in Japan. That may seem a bit strange, but it has everything to do with the charging plug. The ChaDeMO plug, which is widely used in Asia, has a functionality in the plug that enables bidirectional charging. An option that cannot be found in the CSS plug, which is common in Europe. The Mercedes EQS SUV and Mercedes EQE are equipped with the same technology and since the possibilities have been investigated for some time (and ISO 15118-20 is now possible), we can assume that Mercedes models will soon be available that also enable bidirectional charging in Europe.
You can now charge bidirectionally with these Mercedes models
At the time of writing, Mercedes does not have a single model on the European market that is suitable for bidirectional charging. Only the EQE and EQS models with a ChaDeMO connection are able to feed back into the grid and these variants have only been marketed in Japan.
Bidirectional charging and Mercedes, two sides of the same coin?
Mercedes is known for its high-quality, luxury car models that are so good that they are even used as taxis and literally travel hundreds of thousands of kilometers before they have problems. If we look at the electric models of Mercedes, it becomes even more attractive. The large battery packs ensure that the Mercedes models, despite their size and weight, have a considerable range.
In addition, bidirectional charging almost always takes into account the size of the battery pack, because the EV essentially becomes a home battery on wheels. The large, powerful batteries of Mercedes ensure that an average home can be supplied with power for several days without using the grid. Since many Mercedes models are used as business cars, there are also many opportunities here, especially for companies that use large amounts of power on a daily basis.
Bidirectional charging in the future with Mercedes
Mercedes has big plans when it comes to electric driving. Not only did the German car manufacturer promise last year to develop tailor-made solutions for specific customer situations, models should also be on the market within a short time that have a range of more than 750 kilometers, that should all be able to charge at 300 kW (DC charging) and that should also be suitable for bidirectional charging.
Experts immediately see the enormous potential here, because the large battery pack together with the high maximum charging speed ensures that numerous possibilities arise in the field of bidirectional charging with Mercedes. Now the only question is whether the rest of the developments can keep up with Mercedes' plans, because without adjustments to the network and a significant expansion of the number of charging stations for bidirectional charging, it could be a difficult story for Mercedes' innovations. Perhaps the fast charging stations of Mercedes itself are already a step in the right direction.
