Are you looking for an electric car? Then you have probably already noticed that the supply has increased incredibly fast recently and that you have more than enough to choose from. If you want to make it a bit easier for yourself, you can first look at the most popular cars of the moment. When these get so much attention and are sold, there is a good chance that the electric car for you is among them. Below you can read all about the most popular electric cars of 2024.

These electric cars will be popular in 2024

As with many other top lists, it is difficult to determine a ranking. Do you look at the sales figures, the number of models registered in the Netherlands or Europe, or the demand for models on the second-hand market? To keep it simple, we have collected the most popular electric cars, without drawing up a ranking for them. The Tesla Model 3, for example, with a range of more than 500 kilometers, which is more than the bestseller from America, the Tesla Model Y, which managed to break all records.

The Volvo XC40 Recharge is also very popular, as it is exceptionally spacious (just like the Skoda Enyaq, which also scores high in the sales charts). Other brands that are particularly popular and that should not be missing here are the Peugeot e-208, the Kia e-Niro (which has won many awards), the Volkswagen ID.4 and a newcomer to the list. Toyota has gained considerable ground in the Netherlands with the Toyota Aygo and is now also on the list of most popular electric cars.

The most popular cars of recent years: will Tesla win?

Tesla has been at the top of the lists of most popular cars for quite some time, but has lost a lot of ground in recent months. There are several reasons for this. One of the most important factors is that Tesla is now paying the price of its success. People who bought a Tesla last year or the year before do not need a new Tesla now. In addition, these people probably have a sour taste in their mouths. Tesla made customers wait months for the delivery of the models they ordered.

There were major supply problems with the Tesla models, but pre-orders remained open, while the Americans already knew that it would take a long time before the models would roll out of the factories. Another factor is the policy of the Tesla Supercharger network. Tesla had the perfect sales pitch to sell the models, because the Supercharger network was the best coverage network with fast chargers worldwide, at a time when DC chargers with a high maximum charging speed were not at all a given. This network was only available to Tesla drivers, but that is no longer the case.

On the contrary, most Tesla Superchargers can also be used by people who drive a different brand. This has taken away one of the main reasons to buy a Tesla. What we should not forget is that the other car brands have made up a lot of ground. Not only in the field of affordable electric cars, but also in collaborations with charging station providers worldwide, new features in the car and powerful battery packs. Volkswagen, Audi, Renault, Kia, Mercedes and many other major car manufacturers now have a variety of electric models, with Tesla seeming to stick to a limited number of models to facilitate mass production.

The expectation for the future

Many people look to the East when it comes to the future of the electric car and especially the popular models. In many Asian countries, they are working hard on very cheap electric cars, at prices that European car brands cannot match. The question is whether this will actually happen, because those very cheap electric cars that drive around in Asia are not allowed on the road in Europe. There are also considerable costs involved in importing these models, which can ensure that this appeal can quickly disappear.

The Hongqi that was supposed to astonish the European market with a great price, is now announced for example for €55,000 (EH7 AWD), which is considerably more expensive than for example the Opel Combo that is supposed to cost only €37,000. The NIO, one of the other brands that was supposed to be so cheap, comes on the European market for €90,000 (ET7 and EL7).

European car manufacturers must also be taken into account, as they have been working for some time on further developing cheap, compact electric cars that do meet all requirements and are allowed to drive around in Europe.

Some models that you can definitely look forward to are:

  • Opel Crossland EV (around €40,000)
  • Peugeot e-3008 (around €55,000 with a range of 500 kilometers)
  • Audi Q6 e-tron
  • Renault Grand Kangoo e-Tech
  • Skoda Elroq
  • New Volkswagen ID models
  • Fiat Grande Panda EV
  • Renault 5 EV
  • Tesla Model 2 (price fighter at €30,000, although that price is very unlikely)
