Charging your electric car at your own home is the cheapest, easiest way to drive electric. A private charging station along your driveway also ensures that you can always charge when you want to charge your battery. But what if you don't have a driveway and you can't place a charging station where you park your car? In that case, there are a number of options. No driveway – can you install a charging station?
If you don't have a driveway, this doesn't automatically mean you can't install a charging station. It means you can't install a freestanding charging station, but there are many other models that you can install (or have installed). For example, there are wall boxes that take up little space and can easily be placed against a wall.
This means that you can simply place the charging station on the outside wall without your own driveway, or even in your garage. The rule of thumb here is quite simple: as long as the car is placed on your own property, the charging station or wallbox can be placed on your own property and there are no charging cables running over public, open land, you can meet all the requirements and simply charge at home.
Did you know that the wallbox on the outside wall is often the cheapest option? Even if the wallbox you choose is a bit more expensive than an average charging station, you will still be better off. This has to do with the installation costs. The distance between the meter cupboard and the wallbox is usually the smallest when the wallbox is placed on the outside wall, because the meter cupboard is usually next to the front door in modern homes. Pulling the cable and drilling a hole in the wall costs much less than digging a complete trench to run the cable to a separate charging station.
The same goes for installing a wallbox in a garage, although this can be a bit more expensive if there is no connection nearby that can be used. In concrete terms, this means that a charging station without a private driveway is often cheaper and easier to realize.
No driveway and no space for a car at home: what now?
What are your options if you don't have a driveway and no place to park your car on your own property? Then the story changes. It is not simply allowed to lay extension cords or cables on the street, sidewalk or ground in public places. This creates dangerous situations. Exceptions are VvE garages, because you are allowed to place a charging station there if you have permission.
Public charging station, special installation or an extension cord?
If you cannot park your car on your own property, this means that you will have to look for other options to charge your EV at your home. A public charging station may be your best option, unless you can park your car close to your home and get permission from the municipality. There are municipalities in the Netherlands that are happy to think along with you and even help with placing cable ducts in paving stones, so that a permanent cable can be processed. There are also many images of people working with lifting arms to get the charging cable through the air to the EV.
Please note that you need permission for all solutions on public, open ground and that dangerous situations must always be avoided. Not only to protect the people themselves, but also to ensure that the connection to your car and your charging cable are not damaged during charging.
