Charging your electric car in your own garage

Charging your electric car in your own garage or under a carport is one of the best ways to charge your electric car safely and optimally. This way of charging offers many great advantages, but there are also some challenges. For example, you cannot simply have a charging station installed in your garage and you often have a problem with the power required for the charging station. Don't worry, all problems are relatively easy to solve.

Can you charge your electric car in a garage?

You can of course charge your electric car in your own garage. In fact, in most cases it is the best option to charge your car. For optimal charging you need a dry, warmer environment. When charging on hot summer days and cold winter days, charging in a garage will always provide a better charging curve than charging outside, especially because the battery is already at a better temperature when you start charging.

The EV and the charging station are also in a safer, shielded environment, which ensures that you can charge better this way. Charging stations from renowned brands are perfectly resistant to weather conditions, but when you can completely sideline them, that is of course always better.

You can also opt for mobile chargers to charge in the garage, but this is not preferable, especially since the average wall box fits in every garage and carport.

The best charging station for a garage: have you already looked at the wallbox?

Installing a charging station in your garage is of course not an attractive idea. Unless you know that the term 'charging station' refers to all charging stations and models on the market and that the wallbox is therefore also included. A wallbox fits easily in any garage and is in many cases even an embellishment, because there are many interesting and attractive designs. The great convenience of charging in your garage is also immediately apparent here, because you can easily hang a cable holder next to the wallbox where you can store the charging cables. There are also wallboxes that are equipped with a cable holder.

Keep in mind that there are many different models when looking at the wallbox, just like with the charging stations that are placed as a column. Always choose the wallbox that suits you best. Wallboxes are also often placed under carports and on the outside walls next to the place where the electric car is parked.

What should you pay attention to when charging your electric car in the garage?

We would like to make room here for a point that is often forgotten and therefore goes wrong when charging in your own garage. In the average garage, people are also doing DIY or there are other large consumers nearby. That is why it is good to look at the connections and groups that you have in the garage. If the entire garage is on one group (which is likely), then you cannot connect the charging station to the same group because this causes overload or other problems.

Especially when you want to have a wallbox (or other charging station) installed in a garage or carport, it is wise to immediately create a separate group, possibly even with its own ALS on the DIN in the fuse box, in order to prevent any problems with current leakage. In particular, have an electrician come by so that he can create an empty group and immediately check the maximum voltage for the group to which the charging station in your own garage can then be connected.

Charging an electric car in your own garage versus another garage

Please note that the story is very different if you want to charge your electric car in a garage that is not yours, such as a garage that falls under the VvE. If the garage and the land are not yours, you are not allowed to simply place a charging station. Some VvEs allow the placement of your own charging station if you pay the costs yourself and explicit permission has been granted.

If the garage is not yours, you will always need permission from the owner and will have to deal with more rules, guidelines and requirements. Always make sure that clear agreements are made. If you are expected to pay for all costs yourself, make sure that you can lock the charging station so that only you can use the charging station.

Charge your electric car in your own garage

With a charging station such as a wallbox in your own garage, you can easily charge your electric car. A charging point in a covered, dry and shielded place is by definition a good idea if you not only want to charge safely and optimally, but also want the optimal lifespan for your charging station and charging cables .
