Energy independence and your own sustainable energy production: what you need to know

Energieonafhankelijkheid en eigen duurzame energieproductie dit moet je weten

|

Sustainable energy production, energy independence and affordability. Some of the most important pillars from the coalition agreement of the PVV, NCS, BBB and VVD, where numerous major plans, challenges and advantages can be found. At the same time, there are major opportunities, especially when you can already start generating and storing energy at home or at your company. How does this work exactly and what can you already delve into?

Wait: what about the netting arrangement?

The netting scheme has been under fire for some time now. Rutte IV almost succeeded in sweeping the netting scheme off the table in one go, but the Senate put a big stop to it. The battle continues in the coalition agreement, because this cabinet wants to abolish the netting scheme. How this will happen is not entirely clear. On the one hand, there is talk of immediate abolition, but the coalition agreement itself also states that from 2027 onwards, work will be done on abolition in phases (which was the original plan) or complete abolition at once.

In any case, it is clear that the netting arrangement will not last long, although we can hardly call that news since it has been coming for years. It must be added that this has to go through the chambers again and the question is what will come of it. The fact that the coalition has included it in the coalition agreement does not automatically mean that it can just happen.

Climate fund, but at the same time cutbacks and wind turbines in the North Sea

The government plans to continue with sustainability through the Climate Fund and a lot needs to change, especially in the field of energy. The coalition agreement states that two new nuclear power stations need to be built, that gas extraction in the North Sea needs to be scaled up and at the same time that a lot of wind turbines need to be placed here in order to generate fully sustainable energy.

The plans and budget that are ready for the production of batteries and (storage of) hydrogen will suffer under the coalition agreement, because there will be a lot of cuts. The increase in the CO2 tax will also be reversed by the new government and natural gas will become considerably cheaper.

The big idea behind 'hope, courage, pride' is that 70% of all electricity in the Netherlands is generated from renewable sources. This is in line with the objective of having society completely CO2 neutral by 2050.

Generating your own energy and energy-independent living/business

Solar panel owners are not happy with the accelerated abolition of the netting scheme, partly because it is at odds with the rest of the policy. It has also already been announced that energy suppliers will charge fines (feed-in fines) for people who supply electricity to the network, because this can put an extra burden on the energy network. Eneco is one of these companies and announced that this could easily amount to €350 per year.

Home battery and electric car as power bank suddenly much more interesting

But why is this such a big problem? The problem lies in the imbalance between the point at which your solar panels deliver the most power and the moment at which you use the most power. These moments almost never occur at the same time, which means that the solar panels deliver optimal efficiency when you are not at home and deliver little or no green power at the moment when you do need a lot of power because you are at home in the evening.

In concrete terms, this means that you will soon pay to supply power to the network, while you will then have to pay again to use power from the network in the evening and early morning because those are the moments when you need a lot of power yourself. Fortunately, there is an excellent solution for this. In fact, there are even two.

Don't have an electric car and don't want to switch to electric driving within five years? Then the home battery is the best solution. A strong home battery can store the green energy, so that stored energy is available when you want to wash, cook and in the evening all screens are turned on and devices are plugged into the chargers. There is a good chance that you can get help with this, because the government has decided that help must be provided with the energy transition by making existing homes and business premises more sustainable.

If you do have an electric car or are considering purchasing an EV, then you have a mobile home battery. Especially when it can be connected to the charging station at the peak moment of the solar panels and the car is suitable for bidirectional charging. This is a technology that has now outgrown its infancy and is increasingly mentioned.

The third option is a combination of a home battery and an electric car. This makes it even easier to become energy independent yourself, to use as much power as you need and to keep an eye on the balance yourself.

What are the expectations for the next four years?

It is noteworthy that the coalition agreement includes a reduction in the budget for developing and manufacturing batteries, as they play a major role in the plans for the next four years, especially now that it has been decided that the net metering scheme is guaranteed not to survive until 2031.

At the same time, it is expected that owners of electric cars and/or solar panels have already been thinking for some time about the possibilities of getting maximum return from the options and have looked at the possibilities of storing energy in a home battery or the electric car itself.

With us you will find everything you need to store energy in your electric car yourself, just like charging stations that can be connected directly to a solar panel system and where you can even charge at a much lower voltage. In this way you can even charge the battery of your electric car with moderate efficiency.
