You cannot simply use V2L with your electric car
Before you want to use V2L and plug the adapter into the car's ignition port, it is good to keep a few things in mind. Each EV has its own minimum battery percentage that must be available to be able to use V2L. This has to do with the range that is required to be able to drive away again. Always check the distance to the next charging station before you use V2L, so that you have enough range left to be able to charge the EV at a charging station or fast charger.
In addition, not every car is suitable for V2L. Although there are more and more models, it is not the case that it is currently standard. Also, not every older model can be made suitable for V2L with a software update. If you do not know whether your car is suitable, it is wise to first check whether you can use the technology with your EV.
Step-by-step plan for using V2L with your EV
A short step-by-step plan with the most important steps you need to take to be able to use V2L:
- Check your range before plugging in the adapter and make sure you don't come to a standstill.
- Plug the adapter into the car. Since the V2L adapter only fits one way, this can't go wrong. Of course, you do need a V2L adapter with the right connection.
- Turn on the car, but do not start it. For V2L, unlike camping mode, it is not necessary to put the car in park mode, unless this is different for your EV.
- Plug the device or miter box into the back of the adapter.
- The connection now delivers 3.6 kW, just like the usual connections at home. There is a good chance that the capacity will be higher in the future.
- In your EV app you can monitor the battery status, but you can also calculate relatively easily how much your devices consume.
- Are you ready? Then first remove the plug from the adapter and then the adapter from the car. You can then simply drive away without any additional actions.

Important to remember
There are a few things that are important to keep in mind. First of all, the car has to be turned on (otherwise the battery cannot supply voltage), but you cannot use the car during V2L use if the interior plug and V2L adapter are used. Of course, it is also not possible to charge the EV at the same time, since the socket of the car is already occupied by the V2L adapter and this means that there is simply no room for a charging cable or a mobile charger .
Also keep in mind that current electric cars can deliver 3.6 kW via V2L, which means that charging devices will not be faster than at home and that heavier electrical devices will not work optimally when connected to V2L. Devices such as a coffee maker, hedge trimmer or laptop charger will never be a problem.
