Charging station without private driveway, is that possible?

Laadpaal zonder eigen oprit, is dat mogelijk

Erwin |

Cheap and optimal charging, you do that with a charging station at home. It is fairly easy to find the best charging station and have it installed along your own driveway. But what if you don't have your own driveway? Can you also have a charging station installed and if so, how exactly do you do that?

Options for installing a charging station

Every situation is unique and that is why it is good to see how it is with you. It is especially important to take into account that you are not allowed to simply lay cables over public land, because this can lead to dangerous situations. Not only for the passers-by themselves, but also for the charging cable and your electric car itself. In order to help you as best as possible, we have listed a number of common situations below and the options you have to have a charging station installed without your own driveway.

No driveway but private parking space

If you do not have your own driveway, but the car is parked on your own property or is the parking space of the car directly adjacent to your own property? Then you can still choose to install a charging station, or a wall box on the wall with a cable that runs to the car. In these cases too, the charging cable may not come across public land and may only be located on your own property.

Even without your own driveway there are ways to achieve this, but be careful not to violate the parking regulations. Firstly because this will result in a fine, secondly because your charging installation will be unusable in this way.

No driveway but a garage or carport

Don't have a driveway but do have a carport or garage on your own property? Then you can install a charging solution quite easily. In this case, a standard charging station is often not chosen, but a wall box or other smart design. In these cases, the charging installation is mounted on a wall (outside wall, garage wall or the wall of the carport), which means that the charging installation is a short distance from the electric car.

Are you renting the land where your carport or garage is located? Then first consult with the landlord and make agreements about what happens when the lease is terminated. That way you can save yourself a problem of hundreds of euros.

No driveway and no private land to park the car

Do you not have your own land where you can park your car and is it impossible to have the charging cable exclusively on your own land? Then you are faced with a challenge that often cannot be solved without consultation with the municipality. There have already been many people in the Netherlands who have been told that their solution with cable ducts or cable arms must be removed because they are not in line with the law.

Therefore, it is wise to first ask permission (in writing). There is little else to say about this, because it differs per municipality and per civil servant what is decided. If the municipality does not cooperate and there are more people with an electric car or people in the neighborhood who are considering purchasing an electric car, but cannot install their own charging station? Then you can apply for the installation of a public charging station in the neighborhood. Here too, the municipality itself determines whether the application is granted or not.
