Different types of mobile chargers: everything you really need to know

When you look at charging stations and charging cables, you will immediately notice that there are so many different models. This does not always make it easy to find a suitable model or the right cable. When it comes to mobile chargers, the story is no different. In fact, it is especially important to pay attention to mobile chargers. Mobile chargers are often used for one electric car, which makes it even more important to find the right mobile charger.

On this page you will find everything you need to know, from the connectors on either side of the mobile charger and the power of the mobile charger to the features you need to safely and optimally charge your EV with a mobile charger.

Different plugs for mobile chargers for the car side

One of the easiest and most obvious points when comparing mobile chargers for your electric car is the plug that is on the car side of the mobile charger. There are type 1 mobile chargers and type 2 mobile chargers. The type 1 models are suitable for electric cars with a type 1 connection, where the type 2 mobile chargers have a Mennekes connection.

This is immediately the biggest separation you can make. If you have a car with a type 1 connection, then you always choose a mobile charger with this plug. If you have a type 2 connection, the standard connection in Europe, then you choose a mobile charger with a type 2 plug.

Different plugs for the source side of the mobile chargers

If it concerns the plugs on the source side (the contact point), then the story immediately becomes a lot more difficult, unless you only want to be able to use the standard sockets (Schuko). These sockets are the standard throughout Europe and can be found everywhere, including on extension cords, which means that technically you always have the possibility to charge, as long as the contact point is suitable for charging an electric car.

However, there are also mobile chargers with a camping plug and these are suitable for charging at a higher power. In fact, there are even 22 kW mobile chargers with which you can charge your electric car at a very high speed. For this you do need the right connection. However, do you have a CEE connection at home and are you going camping and do you know that there is a free camping connection at the campsite that you can use? Then this is of course a better option.

The following applies here: if you know where you will be charging most often, choose the plug for the connection that gives you the best charging speed. If you do not know where you will be charging most often and you also want to be able to take the mobile charger with you on your trip through the Netherlands or Europe, choose a mobile charger with a Schuko connection for the source side. That is the contact that is most common in Europe.

The power of the mobile charger

Another point that is indirectly connected to the plug for the source side is the power of the mobile charger. We strongly recommend that you first turn the story around. Is the mobile charger for standard use at home and at work? Then check how much power the contact you want to use can deliver and whether it is possible to create a special contact on an empty group, possibly even with a higher voltage. Based on that, you then determine what power you have, looking at the number of phases you can charge on and how many amps the socket can deliver.

If you use the mobile charger occasionally, a mobile charger that can charge on 1 phase with 16A is the most common choice. This is not the fastest charger, but it is a mobile charger that can be connected to all contacts and is a cheap solution. A mobile charger with a higher maximum charging capacity will not have any added value at most sockets, because the socket simply cannot supply more power and the charging speed of the mobile charger is therefore not optimally used.

Tip: Do you want to use a mobile charger as a standard solution because you cannot or do not want to have a charging station installed? Then invest in a solid connection. A new socket on an empty group with a maximum voltage (and possibly even your own ALS and/or reinforced connection) will probably ensure that you can charge at 11 or even 22 kW with your mobile charger. This will save you a lot of stress and annoyance and also ensures that almost every electric car can be fully charged at night, even when electric cars in the future have a heavier battery pack and therefore need considerably more power to be fully charged.

Features and functions on the mobile charger: choose what you really need

A final point that you should definitely consider when you want to be able to charge optimally, ideally or insightfully or when you want to charge for business purposes, is the question of whether there are features and functionalities on the mobile charger. Many people want to have insight into the charging session, also at the moment itself. Then it is useful when you can see directly via an app how the charging capacity is, especially because you can also view the battery status via the app.

A feature that we highly recommend for people who want to be able to charge anywhere is the overheating protection. This ensures that the mobile charger is switched off when the plug on the source side becomes too hot. This is a risk, especially with older sockets or poor connections, which is eliminated in this way. In an ideal world, overheating protection would already be mandatory, but that is not yet the case. If you always want to be able to charge safely and not run any risks, this function has a very great added value when you compare the mobile chargers of renowned brands.
