Camper/caravan battery: what do you need?

Accu voor campercaravan wat heb je nodig en hoe hoe werkt het

|

Camping with a camper or caravan is fun, but nowadays you often need electricity. Electricity for the water pump in the camper, electricity for the lights, charging your phone and laptop. Where does that electricity actually come from? It comes from the battery for the caravan , which is also called the on-board battery or household battery. Are you looking for a new battery for the caravan and do you want to know all the possibilities, view various options and be sure that you choose the best price-quality ratio, then you have always come to the right place.

With us you will always find the battery you need for your camper or caravan. But how does that actually work with such a battery in the caravan and what do you actually need to be able to go on holiday optimally?

Two circuits; 230 and 12 volts

There are two different voltages used in the caravan. First, there is the 230 volt connection; the connection that is considered normal. In addition, there is a 12 volt network, which is also called the on-board network. The 12 volt part must ensure that the essential things continue to work while driving, such as the taps (which work on a water pump after all), the lights and the toilet.

The battery for the 12 volt section is called the actual on-board battery, but is not standard in all caravans. It is possible that the car battery itself is used to supply the 12 volt section with power. Personally, we are not really in favor of that. If this is done for too long, you will end up with an empty car battery and then you will be at your wits' end in southern Italy, eastern Spain or the equally exotic Julianadorp.

That is why an on-board battery is used. In more and more caravans and campers, this is also charged by a solar panel, which is mounted on top of the caravan or camper.

Charging at 230 volts at the campsite

When you arrive at the campsite and plug in the socket (H07RN-F or 07RN for short), the caravan or camper will charge immediately. This is done at 230 volts. Don't worry; the on-board battery is also charged when connected to a 230 volt network, whereby the voltage is converted to 12 volts by a (smart) transformer.

Our tip: Dutch caravans and campers have CEE connections. Not all foreign campsites (certainly not when you choose very remote) have CEE plugs. Taking an adapter plug is therefore definitely recommended. Charging the battery in time is really necessary.

Charge on time and charge while driving

Drawing 12 volts from the car battery, we are not in favor of that when the car is stationary. But charging while driving by using the dynamo of the car/camper, that is handy. Are you going on a longer trip in the direction of the next campsite, or are you going home with a stopover somewhere? Then most cars charge the household batteries via the dynamo. Of course, that only works if there is a permanent power connection (and not only a connection to the indicators, lights and brake lights of the caravan.

Which battery do I actually need for my camper/caravan?

If you are not sure which battery you need, you can find which battery you need for your caravan or camper in the user manual of your caravan or camper. You can also choose to send us a message; we will then personally look with you to find which of the caravan batteries best suits your caravan or camper. Since January 2021, we only carry LiFePO4 . Look directly at the offer on the website or contact us so that we can help you further.
