Can you use V2L with any electric car?

No, V2L technology is not yet available for every electric car and it is unlikely that all car manufacturers will roll out retroactive software updates to make this possible. However, V2L is now becoming so standard that most new electric cars are equipped with the technology and software to make this possible. Isn't this the same as V2G or V2X?

No, and although the difference may seem relatively small at first glance, the gap between V2L and V2G is actually very large. With V2G, short for Vehicle to Grid , the electric car can supply power to an entire network. This requires considerably more technology than powering a coffee machine or a string of lights. Implementation and research are in full swing, but while V2L is already possible in many different models and brands, V2G is hardly usable yet.

Both variants fall under the same umbrella. This is about bidirectional charging, where the battery can not only receive, but also supply. For V2L this was easy, because with a simple V2L adapter the power can be tapped from the battery. For V2G, adjustments are needed in charging cables, charging stations and even the power network at the grid that has to receive the power. Certainly something to keep an eye on, but at the moment it cannot be used yet.

Some practical applications of V2L technology

Whenever V2L is discussed, it almost always immediately comes to mind about holidays. Admittedly, that is not so strange. There are a few things you need to keep in mind when using V2L. Most models have a minimum battery percentage required to enable V2L. Also, the car cannot be used while using the technology. If you keep this in mind, it will be very easy to use V2L:

• Put the car in park (or whatever other mode your model prescribes for using V2L).
• Plug the V2L adapter into the car's charging point.
• Plug the plug, miter box or extension cord into the V2L adapter.
• This can be used directly for the devices, machines or lighting that you want to power.

Of course, this means that battery capacity is used. Therefore, pay attention to which devices you connect to your electric car. If you are on holiday, make sure you know where a charging point is nearby and make sure you have enough range to get there.
