The special Volvo XC60
It was no surprise that Volvo chose to release a compact crossover SUV in 2008, as that was exactly the type of car that was incredibly popular at the time. Volvo chose to use the '60 series (the model number, not the year) as the basis for the XC60, which was then given a second generation in 2013 to appeal more to the current market. The first generation was built on Volvo's P3 platform and was produced in Ghent, Belgium.
The development of the model was based on the Land Rover Freelander (2007 model), which was possible because both Volvo and Land Rover were owned by Ford at that time. In 2012, the plug-in variant of the Volvo XC60 was shown to the public, with a 270 hp 4-cylinder that worked together with an electric motor (rear-wheel drive), giving a combined power of 350 hp. The range of 56 kilometers (fully electric) was a bit disappointing, but this would never become a problem because it remained a concept.
This variant of the plug-in hybrid never went into production. The actual plug-in hybrid versions of the Volvo XC60 came much later and had half the range of the prototype model. It wasn't until the XC60 Recharge Extended Range that the range of the models exceeded 75 kilometers, making it a solid choice for many consumers. So the fact that the Volvo XC60 has become the best-selling car ever for Volvo is (unfortunately) not thanks to the plug-in models of this type.
